Viviani felt as buzzy as a hive of bees the next day at school.

“I’ve got everything we need,” she whispered to Eva and Merit as she slid into her seat. She tapped her foot impatiently as Miss Hutch started class. She was so excited to get home and have John Jr. help her with her Rube Goldberg contraption. Contraption. They’d trap that story hoarder for sure! Oh, how wonderful that those two words hugged each other like that! Viviani loved words whose meanings sang in harmony.

Miss Hutch straightened the stack of papers she held, tap tap tapping their edges into a neat pile.

Jittery bees were still buzzing around inside Viviani’s head, so much so that she barely heard her teacher say, “Class, I’ve selected a winner for the essay contest.”

Viviani sat up, heart pounding. She had forgotten that today was the day Miss Hutch would announce the winner. She held her breath, shooting a nervous glance at Merit and Eva.

“Congratulations, Viviani Fedeler!”

“I won?” Viviani said, blinking. She totally forgot to pull the I won? face she’d been practicing all week in the bathroom mirror, before she even had the story idea. Both Merit and Eva turned to her and beamed, and Eva shot her a discreet double thumbs-up.

Viviani smiled back, and her jitters bubbled up and evaporated, fizzing and popping away like the bubbles over a Moxie soda.

“And, class, I’m going to ask Viviani to duplicate a copy of her story for each one of you. It will be a part of your memorization and recitation grade.” Viviani’s classmates groaned, but Viviani grinned.

“I won!”

She was going to the New York Times! Her words would be in print! She was indeed a true story collector. A story sharer. A storyteller.
